Scriptures was formed out the ashes of This Is A Process Of A Still Life, the Montana collective known for its voluminous textures and pulsing backbones. Amassing the influences of Western soundtracks, post-apocalyptic literature and the grim history of the American past, Scriptures began to weave together psychedelic, metal, surf and Eastern elements into an unquestionably unique sound. The transformation from Process to Scriptures was stark, noted by the debut of their first album.
Released in 2012, the self-titled album by Scriptures ranges from the sparse sounds of the American desert to sonically dense ballads with entrancing opium-inspired melodies and scorching psychedelic metal. Since its release, it listed as an honorable mention by Brian Cook [of Russian Circles] in his best albums of 2012 in the Stranger’s Line Out . The album was also included in Redefine Magazines top 20 mind-bending albums of 2012. In a review by the Independent (Missoula, Mt newspaper), a reviewer stated, “The quintet's eponymous full-length debut sounds like the score to a Cormac McCarthy novel made into a blood-soaked, sepia-toned Western.”
The Hunters EP, released in 2013, was also well-received by PNW critics and cemented Scriptures as one of Seattle's most exciting underground bands. Scriptures has shared the stage with bands such as Earth, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Bell Witch, Heiress, Great Falls, Arbouretum, New Axe Eyes, Midday Veil, and Pontiak.
Their second full-length, Incantations, is set to release in April of 2016.
“Navigating between the dusty starkness of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ soundtracks for The Assassination of Jesse James and The Proposition, the icy expanse of Growing’s The Sky’s Run Into The Sea, the lurching crunch of early Pelican, and hypnotic propulsion of Pharaoh Overlord, [Scriptures] shifts gears between various moods and dynamics with a fluid, haunting grace.” The Stranger
