Contact SGCAbout & HistoryFounded in February of 2010, Self Group Collective is an anarcho-syndicalist creative collective. The means of production, control and ownership of rights, royalties and all else governing each individual artist's career is theirs alone. We come together to form a structure and outlet to present those creations and achieve a communal method through solidarity to carve a more unified means of navigating an industry and world still under the grasp of capitalism where the means of production too often remains in the hands of the few acting as dictatorial authoritarian governors making overarching decisions as to the welfare of the many.
A main tenet and method of our activism is in our example. We collectively work to build the world we wish to see, live the lives we wish to live and work to better not only ourselves but one another as a whole, no lone straw holding the cup. Solidarity. We are principled DIY creators, performing the bulk of each task in our individual processes ourselves. Decisions that affect the whole are decided upon as a whole through direct democratic methodologies; every person votes on either a majority or unanimous basis depending on the decision(s) at-hand. These are the founding principles that govern the collective from the projects we participate in, each show we produce or perform in locally or on tour and our lives altogether. We also work to give back and support our local Portland, OR community by producing benefit events, donating percentages of merch and show income from local shows and tours to PDX orgs and nonprofits and assist in promoting those orgs through all means at our disposal inclusive of social media. Workers rights and control of the means of production, solidarity, be ungovernable. For a more in-depth description of what anarcho-syndicalism and collectivism looks like in the mart of capitalist commerce we suggest reading the about page from our friends and comrades at AK Press. Submission DisclaimerWe don't "sign" artists. SGC is formed of close friends and friends of friends. We only release projects by or related to the individuals involved directly with SGC as well as other close community members through collaborative and other satellite projects including the Live Series, Princess Leia's Picks, etc. We also only work within our direct community in Portland, Oregon; think Dischord. That being said, we are always interested in and love to see what everyone is working on and creating so always feel free to send us your work to check out! If you are interested in starting a collective get in touch, we would be beyond happy to share the process and our experience to help you with the process of establishing it. Community support and solidarity!
