The re-release of KING WHO's self-titled debut album with SELF Group dives head on into their dark/heavy pop sound. As a band they continue to evolve through live performance, life on the road, and working hard as a DIY tight-knit group of friends. Their goal is to create music that thrives as an energetic live performance before taking it into the studio. Once they start recording the band tries to keep it as “live” as possible to maintain the music’s raw energy.
The songs on the new EP contain a dark play on lyrics featuring themes of mental and physical ailment, the re-examination of good, evil, love and hate, and the separation of spirit and body. We are excited to be releasing the new EP, BODY on May 6th (via SELF Group) just before the band embark on their second European tour. "The band has an ethereal sound, inspired by dream pop and post-punk outfits from the ’80s, such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Church, mixed with a modern sensibility a la Deerhunter’s more ethereal moments. This track in particular maintains that ethereality while driving into a compelling rhythmic pulse, and ultimately, it hits a buzzing psychedelic groove that carries the song out quite nicely." - Treble Zine "KING WHO's "Sometimes Smile” is an eerie but propulsive number that conjures an intricate spiral pattern like a spider’s web. There’s tons of atmosphere here, with muscly bass and cannon-like drums providing a sturdy foundation to the more ethereal, water-drop elements.“ - Ned Lannamann, Portland Mercury “Michael Young’s vocals for KING WHO are breathtaking. As rich as Rufus Wainwright, his tone soars over beautiful, classic synth melodies. This five piece produce an incredibly dynamic tease of clean emotive pop. I defy you to not be blown away.” - Jennie Chapman, The Deli Magazine |
